Dear Hoppings Fans,
In light of current world events and based on the latest advice by the government – it is with a heavy heart that we have today announced the cancellation of The Hoppings 2020.
The decision to pull the plug was taken jointly by the Freemen who manage the Town Moor and Newcastle City Council. A postponement of the event was discussed but was ruled out because of the uncertainty of the situation and logistics.
As you probably know, The Hoppings was due to return in June. The fair will not now return until June 2021.
Commenting on the decision to postpone this year’s event, David Wilson, vice chair of the stewards committee of the Freemen of Newcastle upon Tyne, said:
“The Hoppings is a regional institution and we are bitterly disappointed that we have had to take this difficult decision; however it is in the best interests of the many thousands of visitors who come to the fair each year, the showmen, their families and the local community.
“We are fully aware of the impact it will have on the showmen, but after more than 130 years of history, The Hoppings is still a big part of the fabric of the region and we look forward to it returning in 2021.”
We will miss you all this summer – but look forward to seeing you back at the Town Moor again in June 2021.
